1927 Chevrolet Six Speed
In sourcing suitable parts for the restoration for our Chevrolet Touring Car, many items where purchased from all corners of the Island. Possibly the most interesting was this road registered 1927 Chevrolet Six Speed Hauler, which had been used for pulling diggings from a mine, in the north of the state. The original 1927 engine and 3 speed gearbox drove through a Dodge 3 speed gearbox, into a Dodge rear diff housing and wheels. The original 27 front suspension had been retro fitted with later model wheels and tyres, but still no brakes. Fuel system had been changed to gravity from a BSA motorcycle fuel tank fitted to the left hand chassis rail, which also provided a good secure mounting spot, for the one and only, Essex Spreadlite Headlamp. A lonely Chevy oil gauge hung from the steering column, whilst the original wooden steering wheel was long gone, but it had been replaced, by a roughly cut circular steel band, woven and wound with a thick sizal rope. The single exhaust faced forward, possibly in an effort to keep heat from setting fire to the wooden beams that supported the broken and bent chassis rails, and also supporting the Dodge gearbox. This “Road Registered” (as it had to cross a public road) Chevrolet had the allusive horn button, steering wheel and spark and throttle levers that I required, so all in all a good purchase.
